This recipe is part of an ongoing series to complement our series Unnoticed POTUS.  Look out for a new, presidential cocktail from POTUS Potables each Friday after Unnoticed POTUS is published.

As you might have read by now in our article Unnoticed POTUS: Martin Van Buren, people only recognized certain things about him. But those things, they sort of went viral in a quaint, 19th Century sort of way.

If you want to read more about Martin Van Buren and his non-alcoholic pursuits, check our our article [Unnoticed POTUS: Martin Van Buren](https://www.torizopf.com/blog/unnoticed-potus-martin-van-buren).

One of those things was his ability to take in loads of alcohol without batting an eye, or tripping a step, earning him the nickname Blue Whiskey Van.

I was going to try to think of a way to make whiskey blue, but that sounded a wee bit gross to me. Instead, this cocktail features Diep9 Old Genever, a precursor to the spirit we know today as gin.

Since MVB could really throw it back – we knew we had to make this cocktail STRONG. You've been warned.

So here you have it, the Martin Van Ruin:

- Orange Blossom Water
- 3 oz Diep9 Old Genever
- ½ oz Orgeat
- 3 Dashes Dutch's Spirit Old Colonial Bitters![MartinVanRuin](http://www.historyontherocks.com/hs-fs/hub/495828/file-2621401501-jpg/MartinVanRuin.jpg)

Rinse a chilled martini glass with orange blossom water and set aside. Stir 3 oz old genever, ½ oz orgeat over ice. Drain excess orange blossom water and strain mixture into glass. Add bitters and stir. Garnish with an orange twist.
